In 2014, Hiltner Law founder, Max Hiltner, saw a need in the criminal defense market for a law firm specializing solely in criminal defense. Instead of learning a little about many areas of the law and being a general practice attorney, Hiltner chose to focus on criminal and constitutional law and become an expert in fighting for the rights of the accused.
Hiltner graduated from the University of Akron School of Law, with honors, and received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Political Science from Ashland University where he was a 3-time academic All-American in both soccer and track.
Prior to his final year of law school, Hiltner was one of three law students in the country invited to spend the summer in Dubois, Wyoming at Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyer's College where he worked with the nation's most recognized trial attorneys. Hiltner was also able to work directly with Gerry Spence himself, who has never lost a criminal case in his 60+ year career.
Hiltner now competes in the courtroom where he represents those charged with misdemeanors and felonies in both state and federal court in Ohio and West Virginia.
Hiltner zealously advocates for the rights of his clients whether the venue is in a local municipal court in front of a magistrate or in a federal courthouse involving negotiations with United States Attorneys, agents from the IRS, Department of Labor, and FBI.
Hiltner has built a multi-state law practice focusing solely on criminal defense. During that time he’s successfully defended and tried to juries cases as simple as misdemeanor theft and as complicated as felony murder. In doing so, Hiltner has gained a reputation as one of the most respected trial lawyers in Northeast Ohio and is currently a faculty instructor each year at the University of Akron School of Law Trial Academy where he teaches trial advocacy.
